Progress on Sewing
The blue-green stripe has all its seams sewn. It needs hemming the neck edge, sleeve hems and bottom hems but I don’t mind handsewing. This is the vigil undergown. The blue bliaut/overgown is already made and I’m going to wear my wimple and veil set, so I just need a mantle for it. I have the fur (faux, naturally) cut out but don’t know what outer fabric to use. They frequently used the same fabric as the overgown for the mantle but I don’t have any more of the blue satin. The fabric could be different but I’m not sure what I have left — I raided all the fancy fabrics from my stash already. Ah well, that’s all right — I may not need it. But last GWW was freezing!
I’m about to take a break to make a linen gown for Collegium. I have this pretty violet/raspberry linen that I bought from Countess Albra last year. I also have some handwoven trim that I bought last year at Potrero to go on it. I do have a loom to weave my own, but I’m clueless when it comes to that!
And the reason that I’m finally going so fast on the sewing? Other than the fact that I don’t handsew my seams and don’t have a lot of beadwork? It’s because I finally, after all these years, made myself a pattern! Duh. I was forever measuring and re-measuring and screwing up because numbers aren’t my thing, so I finally patterned my favorite fitting chemise as a sloper for chemise, chainse and bliaut. I just scale up a little bit on the front and back pieces and arms depending on how many layers are beneath it. I now can cut something pretty quickly to construct it.
Should I have done this years ago? Yes. Did I mention that I’m not THAT kind of Laurel? Yes.
